Congratulations on your interest in furthering your Boating Education!

SPSPS offers a wide spectrum of advanced and specialty courses. If you choose to become a member of SPSPS, these outstanding educational opportunities all become available to you at a significant discount.

SPSPS currently offers 14 courses. Most run 10 to 12 weeks, one evening per week – a few are shorter, a few are longer. All are now being restructured into modules of about 6 weeks each to give squadrons and members maximum scheduling flexibility. Only a few of the advanced topics have any prerequisite courses.

The Boating Safety Course presented by SPSPS is available to anyone 12 or older.
Instruction is free. Cost of the text and materials is $70.00 plus $35 for an additional family member (sharing materials).

Classes are held on Saturday and begin at 8AM and conclude at 5PM with lunch provided.  You will receive 7 hours of instruction with an additional hour at the end of the day to take the exam.

Completion of this course will enable the student to skipper a boat with confidence. Because most skippers will attend only one safety course, we believe it should be as comprehensive as possible. Plus, graduates are eligible to join the squadron and take advantage of all the other great educational opportunities afforded to SPSPS members.

Graduates receive a both a US Power Squadron and Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card and completion of the course may qualify for insurance discounts.
This course covers:
• Boat terms and types
• Boat handling
• VHF radio
• Required safety equipment
• Nautical charts and chart symbols
• Latitude and longitude
• The rules of the road
• Basic piloting techniques (such as course plotting and dead reckoning)
• Boat trailering
• Personal watercraft
• State and federal regulations

The course is approved by the National Association of Safe Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and insurance companies traditionally provide discounts to graduates. Graduates also qualify for the Florida Boater’s Education ID Card which is required for those born on or after 1 January 1988, who operate a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more.
Students must provide their own pens/pencils.

Each person (including spouse, children, etc.) who will be taking the course MUST be registered, even if sharing materials. This is to guarantee an available seat in the course AND so that you will receive the appropriate certificates at the completion of the course.

If you are not able to attend classes, online and at-home study is also available from USPS. Click here for details.

The one-day course will take place from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at:

St Petersburg Yacht Club
11 Central Ave
St Petersburg, FL 33701

Lunch will be provided.
